Medical Director Summary 

A strong and supportive leadership team is essential to our success and our abilities to continue to provide high quality and affordable medical care to our communities through Noah’s and VSEC. Our medical director is responsible for assisting our associate veterinarians. We strive for professional and medical excellence - the medical director will focus on sustaining, evaluating, and improving our overall efficiency and veterinary medical care to ensure we are always performing at the highest level possible. The medical director functions as a pillar of professionalism and leads by example, constantly demonstrating and encouraging a positive and productive working environment, collaboration, and teamwork between veterinarians and support staff.

 This position reports to the Chief Operations officer with a dotted line to the Chief Medical Officer.

 Working Relationships 

Works very closely with and provides assistance and leadership to associate veterinarians at their hospital. Works closely with veterinary technicians, assistants, client service reps, and pet care team members. Works in partnership with the Practice Manager, and Clinical Manager to lead and drive a positive and productive team. Works in partnership with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operations Officer to maintain and develop new protocols or processes to ensure we continue to improve and provide the highest level of medical and client care possible. 

  Essential Job Functions

  • Fosters a culture that supports the development of engaged and empowered doctors.
  • Provides the team with opportunity and guidance for professional improvement.
  • Assists with apprenticeship and mentorship new graduate doctor programs including training.
  • Works directly with Practice Manager to guide overall patient flow, ensuring patient care is always delivered in an efficient, safe, and compassionate manner.
  • Responsible for assisting/leading meetings with associate veterinarians at their hospital and attending leadership meetings as required and schedule by the company.
  • Oversees patient care issues, works with Practice Manager and Director of Communications on client complaints that pertain to medical care provided.
  • Follows and enforces all organizational operations procedures and protocols.
  • Communicates openly and directly with Chief Operations Officer and to keep them apprised of all unusual situations, or situations that require resolution, including issues with the team, clients, or patient care.
  • Supervises handling and recording of controlled substances.
  • At all times behave in a manner that upholds Noah’s core values and mission.
  • Work with Practice Manager to continually improve all medical/surgical care, training protocols, and team building.
  • Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members.
  • In addition to leadership responsibilities, functions as a full-time ER doctor with admin time as needed.
  • Work in partnership with the Practice Manager on DVM scheduling and coverage.
  • Works with Chief Operations Officer as requested on evaluation of potential new hire DVMs, may be requested for interviews and tours of the hospital as needed.

  • Competently handle surgical complications and rechecks.
  • Competently and quickly handle/respond to emergency and urgent situations.
  • Effectively critique and suggest additional disease control measures.
  • Understand and practice low-stress animal handling.
  • Understand and practice disease -prevention protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience working in at an ER DVM.
  • Licensed in the state of Indiana or willingness to acquire state license.
  • Willingness to attend meetings as required.
  • Willingness to work across multiple shifts as needed to overlap with other DVMs (swing-shift).
